We hope this message finds you and your loved ones in good health and enjoying your summer!
I am pleased share the news with you, our long-time supporters, about The Women’s Fund’s new campaign:Equal Pay Miami-Dade. Because you have been an integral part of our success, we are sharing this exciting news personally with you this morning as it is officially released to the public.
Last year we did a great deal of research to see how we can become a more strategic change-maker in Miami-Dade County. We are very proud of our 24 years working to change the lives of women and girls through education advocacy and grant-making, and we felt we could do more to impact our community. We decided to embark on a multi-year, collaborative campaign to create structural change that will improve the quality of life in Miami-Dade.
But where to begin? So many issues called to us. We looked first at the four pillars of our mission: Economic Security, Access to Healthcare, Freedom from Violence and Leadership Development. We concluded that poverty was the root cause of many other issues – health issues, violence, lack of opportunity, and more.
And then we learned that while one in five women in our County lives in poverty, if women were paid equally that number would be cut in half.
That was the genesis of the campaign we launch today: Equal Pay Miami-Dade. Working with partners in our community from all sectors (government, public and private), we will increase awareness about Pay Equity. We will educate employers about how they can make a difference in the lives of their valued employees. And we will make our community a better place to live.
Here are a few important facts related to this campaign:
- Women in our community are paid $.78 to the $1.00 when compared to their male counterparts
- One in five women currently lives in poverty in Miami-Dade County
- By closing the wage gap, the number of working women living in poverty in Miami-Dade County would be cut in half
We are working with The Miami-Dade Commission on Women, The League of Women Voters, Catalyst Miami, Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Miami-Dade County, The Center for Social Change, local government and area businesses to commit to making a meaningful and impactful change in Miami-Dade County.
Today, we publicly announce our campaign for Pay Equity (#EqualPayMiamiDade). We hope that as a supporter of our work that you will visit our campaign website, like us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and follow us onLinkedIn. Consider becoming our partner and ensuring that your business supports pay equity in the workplace!
